IN YOUR BAG 1773 – Christoph Hammann

Whoops! I looks like I managed to skip a bag, so here it is. Christoph has been featured before, in fact his was one of the earliest bags on the site in 2011. After 14 years he is back. And now he brings us an absolutely epic travel bag setup. Check it out.

I read on your ‘blog that you’re tolerant of repeat offenders for your „In Your Bag“ column. So here comes my second helping. It goes in the opposite direction of most other bags posted and is all but minimal. I call it the Massive Motorcycle Messsucher Bag.

Massive

It sits in the topcase of my BMW R 1300 GS. AFAIK the motorcycle scene in Japan, you wouldn’t run across that motorbike very often but it dominates the old man touring on a so-called Travel Enduro market here in Germany. I take mine off-road regularly and had to get these aftermarket Touratech boxes when the OEM ones failed miserably in the rain and dirt. But that’s just the outer shell.

Inside sits, form-fittingly tight, an Oberwerth leather bag.

A beauty I’ve had for quite some time. For a while it was in storage in the attic and mice got to it and ate most of the photo inner liner.

Replaced with one from a Tenba shoulder bag and in this and the two front pockets I store the photo gear. Sleeves and zippered pockets remain empty and could accommodate laptops, a bottle and various small items of daily use.

Top layer of the photo liner: three cameras for easy access, a fourth body below.

Front pockets emptied, from left to right: crayons and notebook, filters, caps, M11 battery, Visoflex II in it’s bag, ’nother set of caps, Isopropyl alcohol, a reminder of what’s in the XPan, film, a litte but strong blower, microfibre cloth and a bubble level for the XPan. Spoilered some of the cameras there …

Epic travel set

Contents of the photo liner, left to right, back to front:
M11 with handgrip and Summilux 35, penultimate generation.
M4-2 with Keks light meter and Summicron 35 ASPH. (brass, chromed, very heavy, like the bo’keh!). At the moment, it has Tri-X loaded.
APO-Summicron 75, Super-Elmarit 21 with the Spiegelsucher 21, APO Summicron 50.
XPan (Cinestill 800 T loaded)
And finally at the front my main camera: MP with Leicavit (Cinestill 50 D loaded).
The cloth camera straps are flat woven silk from Artisan & Artist, no longer being made, and the leather Hendrix guitar strap on the XPan is from Rock & Roll.

I know, quite a collection, but they all get used. Mostly consecutively, I can’t wrap my creative head around switching cameras and media fast. So when I go into a situation or start a photographic task, I take out one combination of camera, lens and film (or digital) that calls to me and use it for hours on end.

Christoph Hammann

Thanks for coming back after all this time, Christoph. This is an absolutely amazing set. The cream of the crop rangefinders.

Check out the links and please come and comment.
Keep them coming folks, we need more submissions, so get your bag on Japancamerahunter.com

Send me a high resolution image of the bag. Optimum size is 1500px across. Please ensure there is a bag in the shot, unless you don’t use one. The more you can write about yourself the better, make it appealing and tell us a story. Snapshots of your gear with a camera phone and no words will not be featured.

Oh and don’t forget your contact details (twitter, flickr, tumbler et al). Send the bag shots here. Please understand that there is a long wait now as there is a backlog of submissions. Not all make the cut, so make sure yours is funny/interesting/quirky. And please make sure the shot is of good quality, as the ones that are not do not go up.

Cheers
