In your bag 1786 – Steve Hodgson

Steve is a repeat offender, they’ve shared their bag with us twice over the years. The first one all the way back in 2012! I love seeing how people’s bags evolve over time. It’s such a fascinating peek into the intimacy of their creative process. Check it out.

My name is Steve Hodgson and I’m a keen film photographer from Edinburgh in Scotland. You have featured my bags twice before — #207 in 2012 and then #980 in 2014. In the second of these I shared my solution to transport my film cameras for holidays and car trips in the UK. The solution of a ‘Peli’ case with foam cut outs has worked well and I thought I would share today’s iteration and the cameras I use now.

Gear

A few years ago I sold all my film cameras and bought a Leica Q2 Monochrom and this is camera I still use frequently and love. It sits in a small leather Oberworth bag, along with its companion, a Ricoh GRD IIIx and some filters for the Leica. I regretted going digital almost immediately and slowly rebuilt a small collection but avoiding grail cameras like the Leica M6 or the Nikon FM3A — even though I miss them — along with RZ67 II and Ricoh GR1 I previously used.

So now I have a proper bag that’s for digital cameras and a transport case for film cameras because I generally only carry one of these at any one time. The contents of the V3.0 case are:

  1. A Pentax LX fitted with 50mm f1.2 lens

  2. A Pentax 24mm f2.8 lens

  3. A Pentax 40mm f2.8 lens (with this lens fitted and the handgrip removed, the LX is a compact little camera)

  4. A 1974 Leicaflex SL fitted with a 50mm f2.0 lens (I had a Leica R8 for a while but found it an awkward camera to handle and use). This is a beautiful camera to use.

  5. The Zero Image pinhole camera that I had in my two previous bags. I also have an option to swap this for a Chroma Camera 3D printed 35mm cube pinhole.

  6. A Hama film safe

  7. The slot at the front holds a handheld Garmin H1 GPS. I often combine trips involving photography and hill walks and love the big screen of a larger GPS.

  8. A slot for filters, cable releases, elastic bands (for used 120mm film rolls).

This transport system seems to have stood the test of time over the last 12 years.
