Camera Geekery – David Lynch’s Leica could be yours

David Lynch, the visionary director, artist, musician and multi talented voice for generations will be dearly missed after his passing on January 16th 2025. He changed not just movies, but photography for a great many of us. And now his personal effects are up for auction. So if you are camera inclined like myself, his Leica could be yours.

Among the eclectic items on offer are a smoke machine and a coffee maker, both of which have already been generating buzz on social media. But for me, it’s the cameras that really stand out. I expected them to fetch high prices, but things are already escalating significantly as the auction date approaches.

Wild at Heart

As you can see, the camera that really caught my eye was the Leica R6.2, which Lynch was well known for carrying. And it could be yours, for the princely sum of at the time of writing, $7000 (plus the buyers premium of 27% of course).

There’s been some chatter online calling the prices excessive, but I think we’ve only just begun. Lynch fans are passionate — some wildly so — and many have the means to back it up. Perhaps someone wild at heart will go all in for this legendary camera. And if they do, maybe it’ll end up somewhere special… perhaps resting on some Blue Velvet.

Museum piece

All jokes aside, this camera arguably belongs in a museum. It’s a culturally significant artifact, at least in my opinion. Still, I imagine Lynch — ever the artist — might prefer to see it in use rather than behind glass. Maybe that’s the best tribute of all. What do you think?

The auction will be concluded on the 18th of June, how much do you think the Leica will get? And are you going to bid?
