PHOTOGRAPHY ZINES AND BOOKS NO: 68
“YOU’RE NOT ALONE” by Willie Velazquez

Who?
Willie Velazquez A.K.A. Willie From Queens is an American photographer from New York City. Self taught, he really just photographs NYC the only way a native can.
His work has been featured in numerous publications, exhibits, podcasts, and vlogs, earning him significant notoriety and acclaim. Velazquez’s images offer an unfiltered view of the streets, blending the spontaneity of his subjects with the grit and grace of his beloved city.

What?
YOU’RE NOT ALONE is a Tour Dogs publication….no stranger the JCH site. Pure street photography, Willie’s images are witty & unpredictable… shot entirely in color. Naturally all the photos in the book are shot in NYC and are coupled with this clever through line of text messages that gives the book an added narrative structure. It works well.

Why?
Tour Dogs is always on point with their selection of photographers for their continuing zine series. Willie Velazquez epitomizes this with his street photography. Like Tokyo, a lot of photographers go to shoot NYC and lapse into cliches. Really refreshing to see original street photography capturing New York City.

Paname Paper by Gregoire Huret

Who?
Gregoire Huret is a French photographer and editor of this project. He alternates between street and fashion photography (and sometimes both together). Really in the way the last zine suits NYC, Huret’s suits Paris.

What?
Quoted from the paper:
“Paname Paper is a newspaper that tells the story of Paris in photos. Its name, \pa.nam\, comes from the slang used from the 20th century to designate Paris. Produced and edited by Grégoire Huret, street photographer based in Paris since 2009. Through his photos, he takes a sincere look at the life around him by photographing, on black and white film, the poetic nuances of everyday life in Paris.”

Why?
Just a really novel way to present a zine in terms of materiality. The fashion skew it carries relates to the old fashion papers, I got a few from Comme des Garçons myself from back in the day. Shot in 35mm the layout does pose some layout issues but the result is really just less wasted space. But a really a unique mix of street photography and street fashion snaps that certainly has a unique audience, but remains entirely accessible to both.
