PHOTOGRAPHY ZINES AND BOOKS NO: 64

Mailboxes by Joel Pulliam

Who?

Joel Pulliam is a Tokyo based photographer and member of the photo collective, Void Tokyo, and frequent curator of their Instagram account. He is also a former Visual Interviewee that you can see here.

What?

Mailboxes continues in line with his last two zines: Restrooms and Slopes. From its minimal design and presentation to the more singular nature of the photography itself.

I am always a fan of repetition in art as in a sense it is reflective of life. It creates space for examination and appreciation of the everyday small things we take for granted. I feel that is art at it’s best.

This then is a mediation on mailboxes with varying compositions, lighting, and people either just passing or using them. Perhaps an outdated mode, it still has its importance beyond nostalgia.

Why?

With that, to explain why I will use the photographer’s words:

“Now that I have turned another decade older, I don’t walk as far as I used to. The day will come when even a stroll down the usual street will seem like a journey. I hope that when it does, there will be a mailbox nearby.”

Further and more to the point I made above, he states:

“…Today when I see the square, red mailboxes of the Japan Post, I feel the same happiness. To tell the truth, though, I don’t send very much mail, other than end-of-year greeting cards. I ought to write letters more often.

Everyday, I see people dropping mail in the boxes. And everyday, I see the postman collecting that same mail at precisely the stated time. But as much as the mailboxes stand out, I am still surprised to count so many in my immediate neighborhood.”
