PHOTOGRAPHY ZINES AND BOOKS NO: 71
Installez-Vous by Nick Orloff
Who?
Nick Orloff is an Australian photographer based in Melbourne. Alternating freely between black & white and color, he shoots both film and digital… and like Bellamy enjoys cycling!

What?
Installez-Vous (translates to ‘get comfortable’) is a visual love letter to the chairs of Paris. Using the photographer’s own words:
“A photographic series that pays homage to the significance of the cafe and garden design of chairs. In essence, these utilitarian objects of simple, clear forms act as a conduit to the Parisian way of life, allowing you to ponder the allure and complexity of the city and its people.”
With it, I appreciate the Marcel Proust quote and appropriate Charles Baudelaire references he makes that for me certainly conjures the sentiment of the book.

Why?
In Nick’s own words, “Ultimately, Installez-Vous is a celebration of the exquisite purity of elegance of these humble street furnishings and their subtle place at the centre of Parisian culture.
I invite you to take a seat and immerse yourself in the world of Parisian street life to ponder the allure and complexity of the city and its people and to appreciate the timeless charm of these iconic ands comfortable chairs.”

Converting Flow into Dot by Yuta Iwasaki
Who?
Yuta Iwasaki is a Japanese Tokyo based photographer. Specializing in black and white film photography, he often has exhibitions in Tokyo focusing on the photographic print and how we interact with them.

What?
Converting Flow into Dot is a zine I picked up at his last show in Tokyo. In it he plays with the rectangular format of his images toying with the compositions from page to page. Aside from the images itself which you can see below speak to each other compositionally, he abstracts their very shape for a minimal zine.

Why?
In much the manner he focuses on the print in his shows, it makes sense within a zine to extend that sentiment. It really just comes off unique on several layers. I will use the zine’s afterword (translated) for the rest:
“In the world beyond, there are waves. In an invisible place, there is a current that floats freely. When the current gathers together, it becomes white, and when there is nothing left, it becomes black.
On the other hand, on paper, if they come together it becomes pitch black, and if there is nothing there it becomes white.
The flow of light eventually turns into a collection of black dots.
If photography was born into this world with the desire to somehow preserve the world of light in a tangible form, then the landscapes on paper here are the evangelists of the accumulation of various lights, scooped up by Yuta Iwasaki.
His photographs, which are a gradation of black and white and the areas in between, are now with us as countless particles from the flowing water.”
