PHOTOGRAPHY ZINES AND BOOKS NO: 65

404 Not Found Issue 02 by Yusuke Nagata

Who?

Yusuke Nagata is a Tokyo based Japanese photographer. He does a lot in the street photography community from darkroom workshops to zines. He is the founder of Tokyo SPC and has done a visual interview with us as well. Also, this is the second issue of this zine series. You can read about the first here.

What?

Quite different from the first issue that was essentially a road zine to Hokkaido. Issue 02 explores shopping districts of Tokyo and Taipei late into the night. This is becoming an annual project so accordingly Issue 03 will be out in 2025.

Made entirely of black and white film photography, this issue I feel finds him purely in his comfort zone of street photography getting up close and capturing the chaos of it all…

Why?

I like that he included a print out with the zine explaining the motivation. I do like afterwords but tend to loathe captions of the photos themselves. Feel it steals any chance for the viewer to bring their imagination to the work by instead forcing only the photographer’s intentions. So with this I naturally sat with the whole zine before I got to his write up. I will use his words from it to explain his motivation for the project:

The Term ‘404 Not Found’ is an error code that appears when a URL has been deleted or no longer exists. It’s like trying to photograph the crazy Halloween scenes in Shibuya, but now, with street drinking banned, Shibuya has lost that chaos. Or wanting to capture Tokyo’s old shopping districts, only to find many of them have been wiped away by redevelopment. That’s exactly what ‘404 Not Found’ feels like, and that’s why I believe there’s value in capturing the real, present moment that can’t be found online- and why I continue to take photos.”
