PHOTOGRAPHY ZINES AND BOOKS NO: 59

Nostalgic Tokyo Vol.1 by John Murch

Who?

John Murch is a Canadian, Tokyo based photographer. Having lived in Japan for many years he is constantly exploring the many neighborhoods of Tokyo with his camera.

What?

Nostalgic Tokyo Vol.1  is an ongoing personal project amassing a sizable archive of images he has shot over the years. In both color and black & white, he shoots Tokyo with a predilection for Showa related motifs. For those not initiated, Japan uses their own historical timeline and Showa was 1926-1989 ending with the bubble economy that certainly has its own sensibility to it that one can gain from looking at his images.

Why?

As Tokyo is constantly in change, there certainly is merit in its preservation with an addition of aesthetics that one can see from the cover image alone. But more so, and unfortunately what one doesn’t get from the zine (although I do personally loathe paragraph explanations of each image in favor of simply showing then saying) are the backstories behind each image. When I attended his group show, he took a lot of joy in telling me about each photo that added to my experience with his images after viewing them. With my copy of the zine he did include one of these stories for the photo below.

Details.

The zine is composed of 23 images shot all over Tokyo with 90% of them captured on film. It is manageable A5 size printed on matte paper. All zines are individually signed.

Orders can be requested through DM via his Instagram here. The price is 18 USD and international shipping is included.

Tokyo Blues by Trey Derbes

Who?

Trey Derbes is an American photographer who curates the popular zine series, Tour Dogs. He is also a former Visual Interviewee, you can check out his interview here.

What?

This is issue #104 of his Tour Dogs series that incidentally features himself which is quite rare as appropriately (haha) issue #69 was the last time. As the title suggests, the zine focuses on images made from his various trips to Tokyo.

Why?

Along with NYC and Paris, Tokyo has such a rich photo history and style it to it…so why not do a take on it!? Knowing the history, the title is an homage to the famous Araki book of the same name made in 1977 which was his exhibition at Nikon Salon that year. Trey even playfully works into the cover design, “I know Araki did it first” haha.
