PHOTOGRAPHY ZINES AND BOOKS NO: 69
Roma, Tbilisi, & Titul by Tadeáš Plachy

Who?
Tadeáš Plachy is an European based photographer. Shooting exclusively in black and white, he is a member of the documentary photography collective Verum Photo who shoot strictly in black and white as well.
What?
Titul
“The set of photos “Title” was created at the turn of 2016/2017. I followed my friend Víto “Kometa” Vávra on his way to the GCF champion belt. Through the viewfinder of the camera, I got to know the world of MMA fighting sport over 4 months. A world of sweat, blood and people who give everything to sport.”
Tbilisi
“Tbilisi, an ancient city at the crossroads of cultures. Since its foundation in the 5th century AD, many different influences have left their mark on the face of the city. Evidence of this rich history is the diverse architecture and cosmopolitan spirit that is still evident in the city. He took the photos in this set during my trips to Georgia in 2018 and 2019, walking Old Tbilisi and looking carefully around.”
Roma
Shot at the end of summer in 2022, very loose straightforward street photography. It features significantly more photography than the above two zines. Here is a rough translation of the zine’s introductory quote in Italian:
“The sun is shining Good wine is sold Don’t talk about politics Don’t swear And before going out Pay!!”

Why?
Thinking about it, we don’t really get too many documentary based zines. Usually it is a set location with loose street photography as in Roma & Tbilisi. But I appreciate the documentary angle the collective aims for as shown in Titul.
Documentary photography used to be what made a photographer as it was the most practical application of what we would now generalize as street photography during photography’s golden age. To see if a photographer is worth their salt, I like to check their documentary projects (if any) like his. Here is his own quote about it found in Titul:
“After a break of several years, I returned to photography at the beginning of 2014 and went straight into the challenging genre that is street photography. During this time, I also began to gravitate towards documentary photography with occasional experiments in other genres…”

Details.

Where?
The zines can be purchased along with other members of Verum Photo from their website here. All the zines go for a modest 300 CZK which is roughly 12 USD. Check it out~!

Another installment will be coming soon.
