My favourite finds Pt.2
In part 2 of this series I am going to share with you the rest of my favourite finds that I have come across since I have been Japancamerahunter. It is always exciting to find a special item and these are the ones that really got my pulse racing.

In part one of this series I shared with you some of my favourite items, but there was just not enough space to show you everything. So I decided that I would have to break it in to a couple of pieces.
Leica Noctilux 50mm f/1.2

The Noctilux 1.2 is considered to be the most sought after of the Leica 50mm lenses. There were few made, as it had two aspherical elements which were handmade. This was extremely rare for the time as producing aspherical elements was an extremely expensive and time consuming venture. There are many estimations of how many of these lenses actually made it to the market, but you can safely say that there were less than 1500, and even less than that now.
This is not an outstanding lens in terms of performance, but that does not matter for the collectors. This is about prestige and rarity. I was very lucky to be commissioned to find one of these for a collector. Fortunately price was not an issue, as these lenses are absurdly expensive. This one was complete, it even had the hood, case and the original paperwork. I didn’t shoot with it as i just didn’t dare. A very pretty lens.

The Nikon F2 Data

A extraordinarily rare camera, I found this one with the complete set, including data cards. I was so happy to find this camera that I wrote a piece about it which you can read here. This was for a client in the UK who had been looking for one a long time. He had found several, but he had never found a complete one. It is a whopper of a camera and a stunning piece of design. A very happy day for me.

Avenon 21mm f2.8 Super Wide lens

Now I have found a few of these, so you might not think that they are all that special, but I love this lens. It is such a thing of beauty. A lens made in small amounts by a Japanese lens maker, that is something close to my heart. Kodalux have made a number of lenses, but this is the most famous of the bunch, and the one that everyone wants. And I don’t blame them either, it is a stunning lens.

Leica Elmar-M 50mm f/2.8 Black

Now you might wonder why this is on the list. It is not a particularly rare lens, although the black version is harder to find that the chrome. Well, I cannot really put my finger on it. I guess it is because it is a lens that I had wanted to own for a long time and I was very excited to get my hands on it. It is a stunning lens and the coating is beautiful. I was very happy to have the opportunity to find this for someone. And I think they were very happy too.

Leica M3 Black Paint

OK, there is a very good reason why this is here. Just look at it. An original black paint Leica M3. These are rare and they are even rarer when you consider how many re-painted models and fakes there are out there. This one was real though, the serial number checked out, and the mechanisms were perfect. I was lucky enough to be able to hand on to this for a short while when I got it, so I could really take in what a masterpiece of engineering this is. A 50+ year old camera yet it is still working like clockwork. And it looks simply stunning too. The way the camera brasses and fades over time is what really makes it for me.

Nikon 6mm f2.8 Fisheye

This was the big one. The item that really made me feel like I had stamped my place on the map. This lens is ultra rare and ultra expensive. I worked very very hard to get this lens and when I got it I felt like I had won the lottery. I was so happy about this that I wrote a whole piece about how I managed to get it. This this was immense and I was so scared of touching it that I didn’t let it leave the house until it was taken away by the freight company. An amazing lens.

The Canon 7’s

This is more of a case of fortuitous timing than anything else. But what makes it special for me is that these things come to me. I am selling these cameras on behalf of a collector and he sent them to me for appraisal. When you open a box and there is a matching pair of black paint canon 7 cameras and a set of stunning glass you have to give yourself a bit of a pat on the back. I love the way they look and I like the Canon 7 as it is a very tough rangefinder.

Leica MP Titanium

This was another case of amazing timing. I was looking for one of these, and not really holding out much hope. I then was informed that a local store had just got one in and they had only just put it on the shelf. I called them up and got it taken off the shelf, and just in time too, as there were others who wanted it. While I was buying it three other people called the store as they had heard about it and wanted it. This is super rare, there were only 150 of them made and all of them went to collectors, so if you see one on the market you MUST buy it. I think this is one of the most beautiful cameras that Leica have ever made. A real stunner. I was so happy to be able to say I got one of these. I didn’t want to let it go. I even wrote a piece about it.

Well, that is it. The collection as it were. I have been very lucky to be able to find these items and I cannot deny that I love my job. I can’t wait to see what the next thing I find will be.
