Get Featured: Jake Campbell
Jake shares with us a project that tries to to document his move to a new country and culture. No matter where we go, we can always find a common threat that binds us. Check it out.

My name is Jake Campbell and I’m an Australian photographer, last year I made the permanent move from Sydney to Kiel, Germany.

Before leaving I knew that I wanted to somehow visually document my immigration and integration into my new home countries society and culture, but had absolutely no idea where or even how to start.

Until one afternoon a few months after arriving, I was asked to play soccer with some neighbours. This turned out to be the perfect way in which I could start to document my integration into German society and understand its Football mad culture.

Through the regular Monday night soccer sessions I’ve learned how to play the sport, speak the language and most importantly I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever had. The project although based around the sport of soccer, is more about a very basic human necessity: the feeling of belonging, and in my case its this feeling of belonging to a team and a new social group that has at the end of the day helped to make me feel like I do belong here.

Project shot with a Pentax K1000, 28mm 2.8 and 50mm 1.4 Pentax smc lenses, also used for single portraits was a Bronica SQA.
I used Fuji provia 400 film.

Through my love of analogue photography I also started up the business Pip & Jay’s to give people the chance to try and hopefully fall in love with film and analogue cameras without necessarily having to invest in the equipment themselves. We develop BW film, scan negs and slides, provide basic analogue loan cameras and hope to offer some basic courses in the near future.

Thanks for sharing your work with us, Jake. Moving to a new country is difficult at the best of times. It is good to see that you have managed to find a common marker to share with the locals.

I’m really digging this featured set of images and the story. Reminds me of some of my favorite skateboard influenced photographers, something you should take as high praise! Also something that makes perfect sense given your statement that it “is more about a very basic human necessity: the feeling of belonging.” Reading you loud and clear, excellent work :)

    Good day Jake,

nice to see your work here and good to read, that your integration works via sports. Have you also experienced the multi – facetted scene of photography in Germany?

    Cheers from Saarbruecken

    Hi Geoff and Thomas,

Thank you both for your kind words. Much appreciated. Experiencing the multi facetted scene of the German Photography Industry every day as I’am a freelance assistant in Hamburg and Northern Germany, its a crazy industry!

    Cheers Jake

It’s crazy that in a series of photos that only show 1 face, you are able to pack so much emotion and feeling. These are very well composed- best of luck to you in your new adventure.
