In your bag No: 492 – Kevin Van den Panhuyzen

In your bag 492, Kevin Van den Panhuyzen
Not long now until 500. Kevin brings us…well, there is no bag. It is more of a ‘what do you carry?’ shot. But a great one nonetheless.

My name is Kevin Van den Panhuyzen. I’m a 20 year old student from Brussels (Belgium). Until almost a year ago, photography didn’t mean a lot to me. I was interested in politics (I still am) and I just took random pictures with a Nikon Coolpix point-and-shoot at demonstrations and other “activism-related” activities.

For some reason that is still unknown to me, I picked up my granddad’s old camera – an Agfa Silette – and started playing with it. From then on, I got more and more interested in photography. I still mainly shoot demonstrations etc. and also more random “street stuff”. Anyway here’s what’s in my bag…

- A Fuji X100. I bought it last summer and it’s my first “serious” camera. I carry an extra battery most of the times.

- A small notebook and something to write with.

- A handheld recorder (a Tascam DR-2D I think) which is not always in my bag, depending on the situation (if I’m planning to record speeches, testimonies, etc.).

Indeed, it’s a “what’s-in-my-bag-shot” without a bag in the picture. This stuff goes into any bag; whether I’m going to university, whether I’m travelling, etc… Everywhere I go, the Fuji goes with me.

In november/december of last year, I had to do it without the X100 because it had a little problem: the screen for the electronic viewfinder got stuck (because of a sand grain). During that period, my main camera was an Olympus OM-10 with a 50mm 1.8 (and a 28mm 2.8). I also used a Yashica Minister III which gave some nice results, but I didn’t enjoy using it that much. I still shoot a roll of film from time to time, but I must admit that digital is just so much more convenient for me.

That’s it!

I recently also got a personal website/blog which you can visit on http://solidphotos.org/ . I’m still working on it, but you can already check it out. A related facebook page will come up on http://www.facebook.com/solidphotosorg (at the moment I’m still using my personal facebook profile though).

You can also find me on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kevinvanden

Peace!

Thanks for sharing your bag/gear with us Kevin. It is nice to see a very simple approach sometimes.
Check out the links and make sure you come and comment.

Keep them coming folks, we need more submissions, so get your bag on Japancamerahunter.com. Send me a hi resolution image of the bag (please make sure it is horizontal) and its contents, with some details about yourself and what you shoot. Oh and don’t forget your contact details (twitter, flickr, tumbler et al). Send the bag shots here.

Cheers

The photojournalistic quality of your photos is top grade. Most of the demonistrations that you photograph do not use English; but the feeling and the emotion is clearly conveyed in the photographs. The way you capture these demonistrations transcends language and communicates with the humanitarian in each of us.
I tip my hat off to you.
Keep shooting.

I have to agree with Jason’s comment…a very photojournalistic edge to your photos.
Great collection, keep it going!
